Photo Enforcement Proves Very Effective
Summary Information
Photo enforcement results in a significant reduction in traffic violations.
In Los Angeles, CA, photo enforcement equipment has been installed along the Blue Line light rail system. The systems use high-resolution cameras to photograph motorists running under or around railroad crossing gates. It is triggered when vehicles cross over inductive loop detectors after the crossing gates have started down. Two photos of the vehicle, its license plate, and the driver's face are taken. On each photo is the date, time, speed of the vehicle, and number of elapsed seconds since the red flashing lights were activated at the crossing.
FINDINGS
- A 92 percent reduction in violations was found in a seven month project at Compton Boulevard.
- A three month project at Alondra Boulevard resulted in a grade crossing violations reduction of 78 percent.
