Ramp up the Volume

Summary Information

In the Minnesota-St. Paul region, ramp metering has increased throughput by 30 percent, from 1,700 vehicles per hour (vph) to 2,200-2,400 vph. Speeds during peak hours have also increased 60 percent from an average of 48 km/h to 77 km/h. MnDOT now uses a new generation of control algorithms called an Integrated Corridor Traffic Management-Ramp Metering System (ICTM-RMS), with the old freeway management system (FMS) as a fallback. ICTM-RMS turns off the meter when not needed and automatically balances queues. Ramps can also be prioritized. The SCATS system is used in conjunction to coordinate the arterial signalized intersections and freeway entrance ramps, thus optimizing traffic flow.
