Impacts of Transit Fare Policy Initiatives Under an Automated Fare System

Summary Information

This report described fare policy changes made by the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) that impacted system ridership and farecard usage. An automated fare collection (AFC) system on the CTA rail and bus systems facilitated fare policy changes that lowered the price of several multi-day passes. The study estimated that 70 to 80 percent of a 3.6 percent increase in system ridership was the result of AFC-facilitated fare policy/pricing.

The results were based on a two year study of system ridership and fare payment options. The study covered a 1-year period before fare policy changes, and a 1-year period after. Surveys taken by users of the newly available 7-day pass indicated trips taken by these patrons increased by 31percent.
