Summary Information
In a preliminary analyses performed for the Automated Highway System Program, platooned automated control may increase throughput 300 percent and non-platooned automated control may increase throughput 200 percent compared to non-automated freeway segments. Based on the analysis of the Long Island Expressway and the Capital Beltway network near Washington, DC, it was estimated that automated highway systems could improve capacity and reduce travel time 38 to 48 percent.
