Summary Information
In April 1996, Sapporo City, Japan started operation of a Public Transportation Priority System along a 5.7 kilometer (km) section of Route 36. An evaluation on the effectiveness of the system on weekdays was conducted during the month of May 1996 for the time period between 7:30 and 9:00. Bus travel times in the section were reduced by 6.1 percent, while ridership increased 9.9 percent. Also reported was a 7.1 percent reduction in the number of stops busses made at signals which resulted in a 20.8 percent reduction in stopped time.
