This report analyzed the costs and benefits of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) deployments by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). At the time of publication, Michigan had 765 ITS devices installed: 237 closed-circuit TV, 407 microwave vehicle detection systems, 115 dynamic message signs, and 6 travel time signs, in addition to Freeway Courtesy Patrol statewide (except for the Grand Rapids area).
Costs
MDOT contracts with a third party to provide Freeway Courtesy Patrol services, except in the Grand Rapids area (Grand Region). In the Detroit area (Metro Region), the annual contract cost for these services is $1.933 million annually (2013 dollars). Statewide, excluding the Metro and Grand regions, Freeway Courtesy Patrol services cost $367,000 annually (2013 dollars). Total statewide cost of the Freeway Courtesy Patrol service is $2.3 million annually (2013 dollars)
