Summary Information

Minnesota DOT and the Minnesota State Patrol implemented a pilot automated field reporting system that allows law enforcement personnel to use in-vehicle computers to record and submit incident information. The system communicates vehicle license plates or drivers' license information and facilitates issuance of citations. A Geographic Positioning System (GPS) has been integrated to geo-code the location of incidents. The law enforcement vehicle is equipped with a laptop computer, in-car printers and communication equipment for sending accident-related data and traffic citations to a central database. Data can be transmitted via radio frequency, disk or modem. A police vehicle can be equipped for $8,000 to $10,000. The cost of wireless technology at the receiving station will be additional.
