ARTIMIS Telephone Travel Information Service: Current Use Patterns and User Satisfaction

Summary Information

ARTIMIS (Advanced Regional Traffic Interactive Management and Information System) is an advanced transportation management system and traveler information system that serves northern Kentucky and Cincinnati. The system was provided by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, the City of Cincinnati, the Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Regional Council of Governments, the ODOT, and the FHWA. As part of the ARTIMIS deployment, a telephone information service was started in June of 1995. The service provided real-time regional traffic condition information by route or route segment. Sources of traffic information included: video cameras, radar detectors, inductive loops, aircraft, service patrols, and drivers acting as probes. The service was available 24 hours a day seven days a week and traffic reports were updated between 6:00-7:00 PM Monday through Friday. Construction and transit information were available continuously.



In February and March of 1999, a user survey was conducted to measure customer satisfaction:

  • Users rated the service very high in accuracy and ease of use.
  • More than 99 percent of those surveyed said they benefited by: avoiding traffic problems, saving time, reducing frustration, and arriving at destinations on time.
  • Sixty-five (65) percent of users said they would be willing to pay for the service which was free at the time of the survey.
  • Eighty-one (81) percent said they had recommended the service to someone else.
  • The most common suggestion for improvement was to expand the service coverage area.
