Arterial Velocity Planning based on Traffic Signal Information under Light Traffic Conditions
Summary Information
In this study researchers developed an algorithm that uses real-time traffic signal timing information to provide dynamic speed advice to drivers enabling them to adjust speeds as needed to maximize potential for passing through an intersection with green lights. A network of 10 signalized intersections was modeled using a stochastic simulation technique to generate sample velocity profiles needed to estimate vehicle performance with and without dynamic speed advice provided to drivers between intersections. Algorithms were designed to minimize acceleration/deceleration rates while ensuring that the vehicle did not exceed the posted speed limit. This approach enabled researchers to evaluate the feasibility of connected vehicle applications as an alternative to adaptive signal control.
The sample velocity profiles generated from the model were input into a comprehensive modal emissions model (CMEM) to estimate fuel consumption and emissions. The calculation was performed for the following two vehicle categories.
-
- LDV24, which is a Tier 1 light-duty vehicle (e.g. passenger cars) with more than 100,000 mile
- LDV17, which is a Tier 1 light-duty truck with a loaded weight of 3,751 to 5,750 lbs (e.g., pick-ups, SUVs).
